Magna, Utah Real Estate Listings

Magna, Utah is twenty-two miles west of Salt Lake City. It was initially established in 1906 as a farming community, but this suddenly changed when the Utah Copper Concentrate mill was erected.
Prospectors, drifters and miners moved in and set up tents and shanties, or lived in dugouts. At this time the community was known as Rag town. When the company erected three hundred cottages, a new town name was needed and it was called Pleasant Green for a short time.
Since this name was so common in Utah, the name was changed to Magna. One report states that Magna was the name of a nearby mine. Another source reports that D.C. Jacklings use of the Latin term “magna” came from a phrase used by the Masonic order meaning "Truth is might and will prevail".
The Magna area developed as a direct result of copper mining. In 1906 Utah copper had constructed the Magna-Mill a facility for the course crushing, fine crushing, concentrating, and dewatering of copper ores. Also in 1906, a steam electric generating plant was begun below the Magna complex.
By 1916 Magna was a well developed town with active business and residential sectors, and an ethnically diverse population. Workers lived in the town and walked to the mills. Many early residents were immigrants primarily from Eastern Europe. Magna developed a reputation for embodying the American dream. Between 1915 and 1960 the town’s fortunes fluctuated with the Copper industry.
By the 1960s the community was experiencing the first signs of a suburban transition. Not only did Magna’s population begin shifting southward during the 1960s, but also automobile commuting, both to work and shopping became common. During the 1970s the community experienced more dramatic growth. Inexpensive land south and east of the historic town center began being developed into moderate priced single-family homes. Between 1970 and 2000 population has increased to over 23,000. This increase is about double the countrywide growth rate. Magna has maintained its status as one of Utah’s most populous unincorporated communities.
