Murray, Utah was first settled in 1849, but was not incorporated until 1902. Murray lies just a few miles south of Salt Lake City and was originally known as South Cottonwood. Murray has a rich industrial history. In the early years before incorporation, the Smelter industry was at the forefront.

As time passed and after its incorporation Murray was continually being praised as a great example of cooperation between business, industry, and government in the early twentieth century; it was hailed for its own water plant, lighting system, smelter, canning factory, flour mills, and brickyards. The industries were hit hard by the depression in the 1930's, and all the major industry had all but disappeared. Murray's central location made an ideal location for small services businesses, which helped growth after the depression.

Murray is presently the home of many thriving residential and commercial communities. At the census 2000, Murray's population was 34,024. In 2005 it was estimated to be 44,555, but most of the growth was due to an annexation of a portion of the Cottonwood West CDP.
