Sandy, Utah is located about 15 miles south of Salt Lake City, south of Murray and north of Draper. When silver mining began in the mid-to-late 1800's, entrepreneurs recognized Sandy's value as a supply station because of its central location. Soon after the mines opened, its main street had several hotels, saloons, and brothels that served miners who were ready to spend their wages.

Mormon inhabitants of the area considered Sandy to have "unsavory" elements due to the local miners. As a way to fight against that way of life, Sandy was incorporated in 1890. After the incorporation, Sandy had changed quite extensively. The city has a 2005 estimated population of 88,418, which makes it Utah's sixth largest city.

Sandy is the gateway to four major ski resorts in the area: Alta, Brighton, Snowbird and Solitude.
Doug Jolley, a tightend in the National Football League (NFL), is originally from Sandy. He currently plays for the New York Jets.
