St. George is located in the Southwestern part of the state, about 300 miles South of Salt Lake City and about 120 miles Northeast of Las Vegas. The US Census Bureau shows St. George as having a popluation of 67,614 in 2006.

In 2006, Golf Digest rated St. George, Utah as the 7th best golf-home market in the US. Per capita, the St George area offers more golf than any other spot in the sunbelt. In fact, there are more courses per captia in St George area than almost anywhere else in the country. They are: Sunbrook Golf Club, St George Golf Club, Southgate Golf Club, Red Hills Golf Course, Sky Mountain Golf Course, Green Spring Golf Course, Bloomington Golf Club, Coral Canyon Golf Course, Entrada Golf Club The Ledges, and SunRiver Golf Club.

By percentage, St. George was the second fastest growing metropolitan area in the nation in 2005.
The settlement was probably named after George A. Smith, an apostle of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
On May 19, 1953, the United States government detonated the 32-kiloton atomic bomb (nicknamed "Harry") at the Nevada Test Site. The bomb later gained the name "Dirty Harry" because of the tremendous amount of off-site fallout generated by the bomb. Winds carried fallout 130 miles to St. George, where residents reported "an oddly metallic sort of taste in the air."
St. George is home to Utah's first Bed & Breakfast - The Seven Wives Inn.
