West Jordan, Utah was founded around 1849 on the western banks of the Jordan River. The leaders of the area made a promise to the early settlers of West Jordan and surrounding territory that the time would come when, through their industry, beautiful homes, manufacturing establishments, productive farms, churches, and many other buildings would enhance the valley.

In the late 1960's, West Jordan was mostly still a rural area. From 1973-1979 the construction industry boomed, creating many commercial and residential sites. The city's population increased 500% to 27,329. At that time, population projections predicted that the City would add a minimum 2,000 new residents a year in this decade and should reach 50,000 by 1990. By 2005, the city had an estimated population of 93,193, placing it as the fourth-largest city in the state behind Salt Lake City, Provo and West Valley City.

The City of West Jordan is fortunate to have a lot of vacant land left for future growth. This available land and Utah's strong economy will ensure a continued rapid rate of growth for the City of West Jordan.

West Jordan Facts:

The Jordan River, like the River Jordan in Palestine, flows from a fresh water lake (Utah Lake) to an inland salt sea (Great Salt Lake).
Archibald and Robert Gardner built the first saw mill in the area in 1850. The Gardner mill, now called Gardener Village is still standing at 1000 West 7800 south and owners have converted it into a theme restaurant, reminiscent of the days of the Gardner's.
Sears chose the city as its first Sears Grand location, a new store concept, which opened its doors in 2003 at the Jordan Landing shopping center.
